VR Mobile Shooter Game

Towards the end of my tenth grade, my brother, suggested that we create a VR shooter game together. Up until that point, I had only a little experience with Blender, and in Unity, I knew just enough to make intros for YouTube videos. However, I had no programming knowledge. My brother,, on the other hand, was already a bit more advanced and was in the middle of his Bachelor of Science studies.

Without much hesitation, we devised a rough plan, dividing tasks between us. I started designing the first 3D objects and the initial character, while my brother, took on the challenge of programming a VR game in Unity from scratch, without using plugins, and handled the entire backend. It quickly became apparent that the project was far more complex than we had anticipated. We spent hours, weeks even, delving deep into our respective tasks.

After about a month, we had our first playable character ready, and it was possible to move around in the game using a Bluetooth controller connected to a phone that was placed in a VR headset. Running through a world we had created ourselves was incredibly exciting and confirmed our decision to continue with the project.

As I learned how to optimize game performance by creating low-poly models and efficiently using edges, my brother, immersed himself in the Photon Engine to enable multiplayer functionality. Our first map was completed, and I gradually started working on animations, learning to trigger them with Unity for the first time. This part of the project also went well.

However, at some point, we lost sight of the project. I focused on my final exams for high school, while my brother, concentrated on his bachelor’s thesis. In hindsight, it’s really a shame that we never finished the game, especially since we had come so far and only had a few minor details left to complete.

Two years have passed since then, and it would be a considerable challenge to pick up the project again, get back into the technical details, and finally publish it. But perhaps, someday in the future, we will find the time and motivation to bring our joint project to completion.
